The bearing assembly has at least two roller bearings (16,18) in tandem to support a shaft (12) in a housing (14), with each roller bearing axially pretensionable by at least one hydraulic tensioning device (38,40). The tensioning devices are hydraulically interconnected for reciprocal compensation of the axial forces acting on the roller bearings. A pressure switch is provided between the two tensioning devices to open the hydraulic connection to balance the axial forces at a predetermined switching pressure.
