Heating head (5) of device has light source, e.g. LEDs, each supplying focus point beam of visible light directed down onto the bed (2). Light beams converge at optimum heating zone midpoint. Heating head is raised or lowered or patient moved to position patient in optimum heating zone. Controller (6) provides alarm signal to indicator display (10) if a temperature difference is detected by sensor (3). Independent claim included for ultrasound transmitter/receiver arrangement to detect patient distance from heat head, use of disposable skin sensor.
