Vehicle control device for motor vehicles has means for determination of actual route data, e.g. a GPS system, so that for the route to be followed: An energy saving velocity is determined. A safe velocity is determined that takes into account other vehicle positions and speeds. A safe velocity for the route itself is taken into account. The three velocities are compared to the actual vehicle velocity and the driver warned or vehicle control influenced accordingly. For water or aircraft for a given velocity the following routes are determined: An energy saving route, i.e. the shortest. A safe route taking into account speed and position of other craft in the vicinity and a safe route that takes into the account the craft capabilities and obstacles on the course. The three routes are compared with the actual route being followed and used to make appropriate corrections to an autopilot system or to warn a pilot appropriately.
