To set the height of a base plate (14) within a sliver can (10), as it is filled with sliver, the base plate is in the upper position before filling starts, and is held by a spring (17) from the bottom. For the start of the sliver filling action, a second unit (9) acts on the base plate to bring it further into a filling setting to take the sliver. The base plate of a sliver can, with height setting, is moved up or down into the filling position by the second unit using a magnetic, mechanical and/or pneumatic force. As the sliver fills up the can, its weight detaches the base plate from the second unit. The second unit acts on the can base plate in the starting phase, to give it a constant descent as the plate drops down until it is released from its effects and when the plate has dropped by a given path length from the upper filling position, and when the laid sliver has reached a given weight level. An Independent claim is included for a sliver can, with an inner coil spring to push the base plate upwards, with an external lifter. A second unit moves the base plate of an empty can into a filling position to take the laid sliver.
