The axial piston pump comprises a cylinder (17) rotatably mounted in a cylinder chamber formed in the casing, and a number of reciprocating pistons (41) housed in spaced apart encircling bores in the cylinder. The cylinder has one and preferably several vanes (74) which protrude radially outwards and finish with a radially outer vane edge which is adjacent to the inner wall surface of the cylinder chamber. When the cylinder rotates the vanes effect a pre-compression of the fluid directed into the piston bores. Independent claims are included for a casing for an axial piston fluid pump, and for a cylinder body.
