This safety belt roller clutch mechanism has a belt tensioner with a pyrotechnically operated track (5) which operates with the teeth of a gear (12) on a metal hub (10). The hub has a square internal space (14) with concave walls. A plastic spring cage (16) has four holders (22) for cylindrical metal clamp rollers (24). The holders are provided with pairs of spring lugs which hold the rollers out of contact with the internal walls of the hub (10) internal walls of the hub. When the belt tensioner is operated by the rack (5), the hub rotates so that the rollers are pressed between the internal walls of the hub and the axle (9) of the belt spool (7) locking the belt spool. After use, the hub returns to its original position freeing the spool to rotate freely.
