A drawframe has an initial draw zone between roller pairs (13, 14) followed by the main draw zone between roller pairs (13, 12) both under the control of a central computer (26). The relationship between variability in the drawn sliver (5') and the draw ratio in the initial draw zone is determined and approximated to two straight lines. The optimum initial draw ratio is at their intersection. The sliver thickness is measured at a convergence guide (17) and converted to electronic signals (25) online. The sliver thickness variability relationships can be represented graphically, in tabular form or calculated directly in the computer (26). The intersection of the approximated straight lines represents the point where the crimp in the fibers has been completely removed. The optimum can also be displaced by a constant factor from the intersection.
