The folding mechanism has a folding blade (2), a pair of folding rollers (10) and a drive (19) for generating a hypocycloid movement of the blade about a rotational axis (3). A further drive mechanism (4) is provided to generate an oscillating movement of the blade substantially parallel to the main axis of rotation (18), and these two drives can be coupled together. The beat of the oscillations can be synchronised with the machine beat and the oscillation movement can be synchronised with the movement of the signatures (21).
