The method is used for accessing map data for motor vehicle navigation purposes. There is a system in which all or part of the data is released on the basis of map data access authentication information supplied by a potential user. An Independent claim is made for a billing system in which map data is supplied for use in a navigation device. The user fee is variable and depends on the area of map data used. Independent claims are made for:- (1) a corresponding navigation system, (2) a program for providing identification data, (3) a navigation method for carrying out navigation based on stored map data, (4) a central control point for controlling distribution of map data, (5) a navigation device.
