Retrovirus from the hiv - group and its use

A novel immunodeficiency virus which is called MVP-5180/91 and has been deposited at the European Collection of Animal Cell Cultures (ECACC) under No. V 92092318 is disclosed. Also disclosed are the characteristic antigens which are obtainable therefrom and which can be used for detecting antibodies against retrovirus which are associated with immunodeficiency diseases, and the DNA sequence and amino-acid sequence of the virus.
