The nodule prevention process prevents the fine-grain material (14) collecting and building up to form nodules in the clinker cooler. It is achieved by blowing in short bursts of air at high pressure and high speed. The air comes through apertures in the cooler input grid (22). The cleaning air may be aimed at one region or several regions of the cooler input grid. A monitoring system can be used to make it easier to direct the cleaning air to the required points. The grid may have a stepped surface with at least one resting surface and one setting step.
