A bobbin winder, for cross wound bobbins has a splicer to join the upper and lower yarns. A sensor detects the upper yarn, and a suction nozzle is operated by an electro-motor for positioning the suction opening at the surface of with winding bobbin and at the splicer. An electro-motor drive (25) for the suction nozzle (12) is given a defined reversing movement through a winding station computer (39). The sensor (35) to register the correct pick-up of the upper yarn (34), is also connected to the winding station computer. The winding station computer, on receipt of a negative signal from the sensor, gives a multiple and short reversal of the motor direction, to give a pitching movement to the suction nozzle (38) at the surface (48) of the winding bobbin (11).
