The glass includes an integral light source and electronic control circuit. A battery (5) provides a voltage which, by itself, is insufficient to operate the light source. The electronic control circuit (4) includes a voltage multiplier (6) enabling multiplication of the voltage by a sufficient factor to raise it above the normal threshold for operating the circuit and the lamp. The independent light unit (1) is intended to be incorporated into a fashion article (2), such as a champagne glass. The device includes a light source, e.g. an LED or electroluminescent lamp (3) and an integrated electronic control circuit (4). A battery (5) provides a voltage which, by itself, is insufficient to operate the light source. The electronic control circuit (4) includes a voltage multiplier (6) enabling multiplication of the voltage by a sufficient factor to raise it above the normal threshold for operating the circuit and the lamp. The voltage multiplier may be 74LV00 integrated circuit, whilst the supply battery may be a single cell providing a voltage of 1.5 volts.
