The bistable display mechanism has a liquid crystal material (30) with two substrates (20,40) with interior face electrodes. The crystal material has two stable positions twisted and non twisted set apart by 90 degrees set by voltage switching. The liquid crystal layer thickness forms a birefringent layer. There is a polariser screen (10) and a reflective element (50).
