The detection and iterative decoding method has symbols transmitted including learning symbols. Prior to all iterations an initial linear estimate of the pulse response is made from specific learning parameters (A). Then a sub optimal equalisation (B) operation and decoding (C) is carried out on a reduced channel trellis. The steps are repeated by iteration (F).
