The system uses a triangular mesh to represent the shape of a surface, each triangle being identified by three vertices and three edges separating one triangle from the neighbouring triangle. A specific region of interest within the mesh may be identified and used to represent the movements of an animated object. The procedure provides refinement of a triangular mesh which is representative of an object in three dimensions. The mesh consists of an arrangement of vertices and triangular faces, each defined by reference to the vertices which surface links. Each triangle also presents three edges, each joining two of the vertices. The procedure includes a stage of selection of at least one region of interest. The region of interest belongs to a group a set of triangular faces adjacent to an assembly of edges each separating two triangular faces. A first face is orientated towards the eye of an observer, and the second face is oppositely orientated. These triangular faces belong to an animated region of the object. The refinement of the mesh is effected locally on this region of interest.
