The engine comprises a cylinder (3) defining a combustion chamber (5) in which a piston (7) slides. Two inlet orifices (9a,9b) discharging into the combustion chamber are closed by inlet valves (11a,11b) and supplied by two air/fuel inlet conduits (13a,13b). The inlet orifice and conduits are arranged to as to engender air/fuel turbulence in the opposite direction (F1) inside the combustion chamber. The method for improving combustion initiation consists of opening sequentially the inlet valves during the inlet phase.
