Printable security substrate comprises a nonwoven web of mechanically strong fibers or filaments between two polyester films. An Independent claim is also included for a process for producing a form of the security substrate in which the outer surfaces of the polyester films bear opaque coatings, comprising gluing together the polyester films and nonwoven material, applying the opaque coatings using a water-based composition, optionally leaving an uncoated window, and optionally depositing a layer of solvent-based ink over the opaque coatings.
