Novel compositions and compounds comprising metal salts with sulfonyl attached to perhalogenated carbon forming Lewis acids, useful as catalysts for reaction of electrophilic cations

The use of salts of elements of valency mu (with mu = 3 or more) as catalysts , the co-anions comprising at least one and no more than ( mu -1) anions with a sulfonyl function attached to a perhalogenated atom, preferably perfluorinated and more preferably a perfluoromethylene group. Independent claims are also included for the catalytic compositions and compounds and their preparation, and reactants including the catalyst and an agent providing a carbocation.
