The laboratory bench worktop (8) has an aperture to receive a recessed container holding a control unit (9) and an electric heater (12) e.g. for heating test-tubes, flasks or other apparatus. The container has an outer rim that rests on the worktop, and when the heater is not in use it can be removed and replaced by a flat cover.
