Device for measuring the density or the volumetric mass of a fluid comprises a diffuser of acoustic or ultrasonic waves, perfectly defined with respect to its geometry and acoustic characteristics, means for production and receipt of acoustic or ultrasonic waves and means for analysis of the received waves. An independent claim is made for an operating method for a density or volumetric mass measurement device. Accordingly the device is immersed in the fluid, waves are transmitted and received and a temporal, frequency or spatial analysis is undertaken on the received waves diffused by the diffuser.
