Engine crankshaft is joined to an inertial wheel (2) which is connected to a second inertial wheel (3) by springs (4). The drive (9) to the gearbox is completed by a clutch (6). Inertial wheels are also connected by a magneto-rheological fluid (22) whose shear strength may be increased at certain stages of operation by a magnetic field (23). Fluid may be contained in a chamber with a side attached to each inertial wheel or absorbed in a foam : An independent claim is made for the use of a magneto-rheological fluid to control torsional vibration.
