Preparation of a halogenated olefin by the reaction of an alkyne and/or allenic compound with a hydrogen halide in a reaction medium comprising (a) a catalyst comprising a palladium compound and (b) an organic solvent which dissolves the catalyst, preferably an organic nitrile. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the preparation of hydrofluoroalkanes; and (2) a catalytic system of palladium and an organic nitrile.
