The equipment consists of a preheater (20) and high energy laser welder (40) which are mounted on a robotically controlled arm (60) which incudes a separate welder adjustment (61). The preheating is effected by an inductor which is supported and supplied through arms (23) and assisted by a field concentrator (25). The high energy keyhole laser welder produces a continuous band of fused material along the two plates (10,15) to be joined. An Independent claim is also included for a method of preheating by electromagnetic induction.
