Data is captured in A-scan format with an ultrasonic transducer arranged at a suitable incidence angle with respect to the test piece surface and first and second echoes arising from the reflectors are processed by restoring the A-scan and then interpreting it. Interpretation of the scan is improved by inverting a deconvolution mode prior to restoring.
