A chopstick has a spike 22 projecting from the food-engaging end for impaling food. The spike 22 may be situated in a longitudinal bore 18 which runs the length of the chopstick. The spike 22 is preferably moveable between an extended position and a retracted position and it can be retained in the extended position by either friction or a detent 26 on either the elongated rod 20 or the body portion 10 which engages a recess 28 in the other. The body portion 10 or the spike 22 or both may be disposed of after a single use. The hollow body 18 of the chopstick allows it to be used as a drinking straw or as a syringe to draw up small quantities of sauce etc.
