A combustion space of a direct-injection spark-ignition engine with a spark plug 2 arranged near the cylinder centre axis 1, an injector 3 arranged laterally in the combustion space, a piston 7, inlet ducts and valves 4, 4a and outlet valves 5, 5a. The piston head 8 has a recess or bowl 9 arranged offset to the cylinder centre axis 1. A swirl generating device is disposed in the first inlet duct and tumble flow is also provided. Also disclosed is a method of forming a mixture in the combustion space of a direct-injection spark-ignition internal combustion engine with an offset piston recess 9 and anti-clockwise or clockwise swirl in one inlet duct, the fuel jet injected in such a way to cause swirl movement in a corresponding anti-clockwise or clockwise direction.
