PURPOSE: To provide a wide band ultrasonic converter capable of completely preventing the generation of destructive interference even when two waves are combined. ;CONSTITUTION: The wide band ultrasonic converter has a layer 4 consisting of a piezo-electric material held between respective layers 10, 12 of a supporting material and a matching material. A piezo-electric element is connected to a pair of electric terminals and voltage to be changed is generated between these terminals. The piezoelectric layer 4 has structure capable of preventing the generation of destructive interference between an wave generated from its rear face 18' and propagated forward and an wave generated from its front face 20 and propagated forward in response to the voltage to be changed when the frequency of the wave is even times the half frequency of the specific piezoelectric layer. The effect is attained by roughing the rear face 18' of the layer 4 or spatially changing a piezoelectric coupling degree in the thickness direction on a part near to the rear face 18' out of the layer 4.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
