PURPOSE:To detect a dent on the tooth surface of a gear in a short time by rotating a master gear and a gear to be insected having the same number of teeth while mating on a single tooth surface and calculating the number of excess pulses based on the difference of rotational amount. CONSTITUTION:The same number of teeth is set for a master gear 16 and a gear 12 to be inspected and the gear 12 is rotary driven clockwise, for example, with a predetermined torque through a first drive mechanism 26. On the other hand, the gear 16 is rotary driven oppositely to the gear 12 (counterclockwise) with a predetermined torque through a second drive mechanism 32. consequently, the tooth surface of each tooth in the gear 12 comes into contact, on the clockwise side, with the tooth surface of a corresponding tooth in the gear 16 on the clockwise side. In other words, the gears 12, 16 are brought into a single tooth surface mating state. Rotational amount of the gears 12, 16 are measured precisely at a predetermined resolution and the number of excess pulses is calculated based on the difference thereof. A dent on the tooth surface of the gear 12 is then detected based on the number of excess pulses thus calculated.
