PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preform for forming metal matrix composites which can easily be infiltrated without preheating for the preform by a casting method, such as HPDC (high pressure die casting) and LPDC (low pressure die casting), and composed of the preform and further, even when composing for a part of the resultant casting, required linear expansion coefficient and strength can be provided to the part needing them while securing sufficient interfacial strength and resultantly the function of the casting can be greatly improved.;SOLUTION: In the preform 1 used for forming metal matrix composites, low volume fraction members 3 of relatively low volume fraction are provided in such a way that they are diffusion bonded to a high volume fraction member 2 of relatively high volume fraction.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
