PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting the amount of cloths in a washing machine having good calculation accuracy of moment of inertia for detecting the amount of cloths. PSOLUTION: In the method for detecting the amount of cloths in the washing machine, the moment of inertia of a washing tub containing the cloths to be washed and rotated by a motor is obtained and the amount of the cloths is detected based on the obtained moment of inertia. Accelerating the washing tub by first torque (S1, 5, 10), detecting a rotational speed R (S2) a first rotational speed of the washing tub (S3), detecting a rotational speed (r) faster (S6) than the second rotational speed faster than the first rotational speed of the washing tub and measuring the required time from the rotational speed R to the rotational speed (r) (S4, 8), the moment of inertia is obtained based on the first torque, the rotational speed R, the rotational speed (r) and the required time.
