PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for measuring an optical absorption response type substance state utilizing a surface plasmon resonance phenomenon capable of improving a measuring sensitivity. SOLUTION: The method for measuring the optical absorption response type substance state utilizing the surface plasmon resonance phenomenon comprises the steps of disposing a metal thin film on a rear surface of a prism, constituting a surface of the thin film so as to directly contact with a sample, irradiating the rear surface of the thin film with a light beam through the prism by totally reflecting, analyzing a dark-line generated at that time and thereby measuring the substance state of the sample on the surface of the metal. The method further comprises the steps of coupling the optical absorption substance to the sample, setting a thickness of the thin film to 55 nm or less, and measuring the substance state of the sample based on a change in a lowest reflectivity of the reflected light.
