PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically perform a knocking determination corresponding to the sense of hearing of the human ear without depending on the sense of hearing. PSOLUTION: A cylinder pressure sensor 14 is placed on an engine, and a microphone detecting a sound that is generated during engine operation is placed with an appropriate gap from the engine. A waveform (search waveform) of an output signal of the sensor 14 and a waveform (observation waveform) of an output signal of the microphone 11 are calculated for sum of products to calculate a correlation value of the both output signals. Since this correlation value and the knocking strength by the sense of hearing have almost a linear relationship, if the value is used as a measurement value of the knocking strength, the measurement value of the knocking strength is associated with the knocking strength by the sense of hearing, eliminating a person to hear and distinguish the knocking sound in an adapting step for the ignition timing.
