PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high-purity sterol or a mixture of the high-purity sterol/ steryl ester.;SOLUTION: The sterol or the mixture of the sterol/steryl ester from a composition is obtained by treating a distillate of a deodorized vegetable oil, including ≥70 wt.% of steryl ester calculated excluding neutral lipid, fatty acid and fatty acid ester. A process obtains a reaction mixture by hydrolysis, saponification and transesterification of the composition, and a process separating and recovering the sterol or the mixture of the sterol and the steryl ester from the reaction mixture are provided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
