PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide semiconductor laser driving method/device for stabilizing a light emission quantity and preventing the fluctuation of light quantity even if the characteristics of a semiconductor laser differ at every element irrespective of the degree of a deterioration in the semiconductor laser, semiconductor laser deterioration detecting method/device for detecting the state of the deterioration in the semiconductor laser, an image reader having the semiconductor laser driving device or the semiconductor laser deterioration detecting device and the image forming device.;SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser driving method enables the detection of a kink region in the semiconductor laser when the light emission quantity of the semiconductor laser 101 in the image reader is controlled. The semiconductor laser is driven to a part except for the detected kink region. A driving current in the variation point of the kink region in the semiconductor laser is detected and the semiconductor laser is driven in a driving current region below it.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
