PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon carbide-based heat resistant ultralight porous material maintaining a form of a sponge-like porous structure, and a method by which the porous material is produced easily.;SOLUTION: A slurry containing a resin and a silicon powder is impregnated into a skeleton having a form of a sponge-like porous structure in such a manner that the continuous pores in the porous structure are not clogged up, and the resultant sponge-like porous structure impregnated with the slurry is carbonized at 900 to 1,350°C under vacuum or an inert atmosphere. Then, the carbonized porous structure material is subjected to reaction sintering at a temperature of ≥1,350°C under vacuum or an inert atmosphere so as to form silicon carbide having good wettability to molten silicon and at the same time to form open porous attributable to the volume reduction reaction. The silicon carbide-based heat resistant ultralight porous structure material is produced by melting and impregnating silicon into the obtained porous structure at 1,300 to 1,800°C under vacuum or an inert atmosphere.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
