PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling refractive index characteristics of a homeotropically aligned liquid crystal film so as to have a desired value.;SOLUTION: In manufacturing the homeotropically aligned liquid crystal film by homeotropically aligning a liquid crystalline composition for homeotropical alignment containing a side-chain type liquid crystal polymer forming a homeotropically aligned liquid crystal layer and a photo-polymerizable liquid crystal compound in a liquid crystal state, by fixing the state maintaining the aligned state and subsequently by subjecting to light irradiation, the refractive index characteristics of the homeotropically aligned liquid crystal film is controlled so as to have the desired value by varying the mixing ratio of the side-chain type liquid crystal polymer and the photo-polymerizable liquid crystal compound.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
