PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve engine load detecting accuracy by increasing the difference in ratio (t/T) of a transit time (t) of a rotary body (100), rotating together with a crankshaft, within a range of a predetermined certain angle to a time (T) for one rotation of the rotary body, when engine load is obtained on the basis of the ratio (t/T). SOLUTION: In a jump-spark-ignition type four-cycle internal combustion engine, while detecting a transit time (A) of the rotary body (100), rotating together with the crankshaft, within the range of the predetermined constant angle from near a predetermined angle in front of the top dead center to near the top dead center, the time (C') for one rotation of the rotary body (100) is detected on the basis of the detecting timing near the predetermined angle in front of the top dead center within the range of the predetermined angle. On the basis of the difference between the ratios (A/C') obtained with respect to two continuous rotations, the engine load is detected.
