The present invention relates to a method of producing a herbicide resistant transgenic plant by transforming a plant with a nucleic acid molecule encoding a protoporphyrin IX binding subunit of a plant or photosynthetic microorganism magnesium chelatase or a deletion variant having the organelle transit signal deleted. The invention also relates to a method of producing a herbicide resistant transgenic plant by transforming a plant with a nucleic acid molecule encoding a plant ferrochelatase or a ferrochelatase deletion variant having the organelle transit signal deleted.
