A nozzle for transferring a flow of liquid metal between metallurgical vessels or molds comprising an inlet region for receiving the liquid metal. A flow regulator, such as a plug stem, is movable from an open position to a closed position relative to the inlet region to permit and prevent flow to the nozzle respectively. The inlet region and flow regulator define a control zone with each other. A pressure modulator downstream of the control zone is adapted to minimize the pressure differential in the control zone. The pressure modulator throttles the flow downstream of the control zone.
