The present invention relates to novel series of substituted 2,3-diones that are usable as neuroprotective agents. It also relates to novel intermediates, processes for preparing as well as pharmaceutical compositions containing the indicated compounds. These compounds are glutamate antagonizing agents and are usable for treating apoplexy, brain ischemia or brain infarct that are caused by thromboembolic or hemorrhagic apoplexy, brain angiospasm, hypoglycemia, heart stoppage, epileptic state, perinatal asphyxia, anoxia, Alzheimer?s disease, parkinsonism and Huntington?s disease.
