In the present invention there is disclosed method for producing polyamide fibers exhibiting improved flame retardancy, the method comprising mixing a polyamide being in the form of solid particles with and additive comprising a vulcanizable mixture of silicones and a catalyst in a thermoplastic matrix, further melt mixing said polyamide and said additive and melt spinning fibers. The invention further relates to polyamide fibers obtained by the above-described method and carpets comprising such fibers. The polyamide fibers exhibiting improved flame retardancy are fibers intended for carpets.
