A process for making a rubber compounding resin comprises reacting cpds. of formula (I), YCH=CH2 (II) and ZCHO (III). In formulae X = H, OH, or 1-4C alkyl; Y = H, phenyl, or 1-4C aliphatic alkyl; and Z = H or 1-4C alkyl. Also claimed are a cpd. of formula (IV) and a process for the prepn. of a cpd. of formula (V). Pref. (I) is resorcinol, (II) is styrene, and (III) is formaldehyde. The mol. ratio of (I):(II) is 1:0.25-1.0. The mol. ratio of (II):(III) is 0.25-1.0:1. The mol. ratio of (III):(I) is 0.5-0.8:1.0. First (I) is reacted with (II) at 120-140 deg.C in the presence of an acid catalyst, pref. p-toluene sulphonic acid. Then the prod. is reacted with (III) at 110-130 deg.C. Resorcinol still residue and NaOH are introduced in the second step.
