Bonding steel to rubber, esp. steel tyre cords - by depositing copper on the metal and using a conjugated diene-vinyl substd. heterocyclic base copolymer adhesive
Bonding steel to rubber, esp. steel tyre cords - by depositing copper on the metal and using a conjugated diene-vinyl substd. heterocyclic base copolymer adhesive
Process comprises (a) depositing a copper layer on the ferrous metal substrate from a copper (II) soln. contg. halogen ions, (b) applying a layer of an adhesive comprising a copolymer of 50-99 wt.% conjugated diene, 1-45 wt. % of a vinyl substd. heterocyclic base and 0-40 Wt. % other copolymerisable monomers, and (c) applying the rubber and bonding under heat and press. The process gives excellent bond strengths between the steel and rubber. The bond is maintained at high operating temps., e.g. as encountered in tyres during use. The bonds have higher strength at elevated temps. than those produced using known phenolic resins or isocyanate-based systems, and the adhesive is not sensitive to moisture and has better storage life than isocyanate materials. The copper may be deposited by electrolytic or electroless methods e.g. from solns. contg. CuBr2 or CuCl2.
