The protection system for passengers in a vehicle restricts freedom of movement of a seated passenger in the closed state but provides complete freedom of movement when raised. The vehicle may be an aircraft, boat, bus, etc. The seats (1,2,3) are each provided with a breast stirrup (4,5,6) pivotably fitted to the seat and forming part of a movement restrictor (7,8,9). The stirrup is movable between an open state (4,5) and a closed state (6). In the open state a passenger (10) can take his or her place on the seat. Once seated, the stirrup is lowered by pivoting to a position in front of the breast of the passenger (10). Devices are incorporated in the movement restrictor for matching the stirrup to the posture of the passenger. In the seat are operating devices which can move the stirrup between open and closed positions. The breast stirrup is connected with an arm (12), which is pivotable around a rotary point (13) on the seat. Through the seat runs a bar (14) which joins two arms together. The bar has a gearwheel (15), the teeth of which engage with a second gearwheel (16) fitted on a second bar driven by an electric motor (18) whose driving action makes possible an alteration in the state of the movement restrictor. The electric motor is provided with an antenna (19) connected to the front and rear of the motor. On receipt of a signal, the electric motor is switched on and rotates the second bar anti-clockwise and on receipt of a second signal it rotates the bar clockwise.
