The distance between successive animal transport vessels (5) can be varied along different parts of the transport trajectory for the vessel circulation system. An installation (1) for stunning animals (2) to be slaughtered, especially pigs, comprises a room (7) for the animals to pass through, a system (8) for supplying a stunning gas to the room, vessels for loading the animals into and a vessel circulation system with part of its transport trajectory extending through the room. The distance between successive vessels can be varied along different parts of the transport trajectory.
