A smart card (1) has a communication device to communicate with a processing unit (2) and a memory (6) including system information, a biometric template and software to drive a processor (5) to compare the template to a biometric sample. A sensor (8) can be used to record a fingerprint and the sample is preprocessed in the processing unit, which has circuits (11) for communicating with other units. Independent claims are included for a portable data carrier, for a method of producing a biometric sample and for a computer program product with code.
