The authentication method is for a portable data carrier which has a biometric sensor and a control unit. The method involves inviting the user to provide biometric information e.g. fingerprint, for the sensor. The sensor is illuminated or exposed and detects the provided information. The information is then analyzed by the control unit. The step of inviting the user to provide the information results from the step of illuminating the sensor. Independent claims also cover a portable data carrier, a mobile communication end device and a communication system.
