The present invention relates to a method of diagnosing cat scratch diseaseand a method of diagnosing bacillary angiomatosis in a subject by detectingthepresence of Rochalimaea henselae or an immunogenically specific determinantthereof in the subject. Also provided by the present invention is a vaccinecomprising an immunogenic amount of nonpathogenic Rochalimaea henselae or animmunogenically specific determinant thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptablecarrier.
