The use of polyurethaneswhich are soluble or dispersible in water and arecomposed ofa) at least one compound which contains two or moreactive hydrogens per molecule,b) at least one diol containing acid groups or saltgroups andc) at least one diisocyanatewith a glass transition temperature of at least 15°C andacid numbers of from 12 to 150 or the salts of thesepolyurethanes as aids in cosmetic and pharmaceuticalcompositions, and of polyurethanes which are soluble ordispersible in water and which contain (a) at leastmol % of a polycondensate of lactic acid and of apolyol of the formula(see formula IV)whereY is a radical derived from a dihydric to tetrahydrocalcoholn is 1 - 50 andm is 1 - 4as copolymerized units.
